| Memo to People Delivering Stuff for Us to Taste and Write About By Carrington Fox - May 05, 2008 at 11:36:06 AM If you have a product for Scene staff to taste and possibly write about, your odds of coverage are substantially higher if you time your delivery well. Take Sydney Garrett-Hayes, for example. She dropped off her delectable goodies from the Sydney Trading Company right around breakfast on Monday morning. That was just about the time Jack Silverman was thinking, “Hmm, if only I had a home-baked biscotti to dip into my coffee before I have to edit this raggedy dining review.” That's right around when Steve Haruch was thinking, “I need some rocky road fudge to help me write my biweekly tract of existentialist philosophy masquerading as a sports column.” Meanwhile, I was thinking, “Well, I haven't eaten in about 15 minutes, and there's, like, an hour till lunch.” And so we tore into STC's homemade fudge, coconut madeleines and almond brittle like villagers receiving a food-drop from the World Food Programme. You may know Garrett-Hayes from The Standard restaurant on Eighth Avenue, where she prepares a selection of desserts to round out chef Joe Shaw's elegant menu of classic Southern-inspired dishes. When she's not making peach cobbler and pecan pie at the Standard, the queen of tarts is whipping up Sydney Trading Company's truffles, brittles, shortbreads, cookies, cakes, pies and crème brûlées, all of which can be delivered within a 20-mile radius of Nashville. She also offers a selection of boxed lunches and pastries, available with 48 hours' notice. We particularly enjoyed the foot-long biscotti and the almond brittle, and we'd like to get our hands on some of STC's mission fig jam. To order from Sydney Trading Company, visit thesydneytradingcompany.com, or call Garrett-Hayes at 739-1212. |
''I’ve called on Sydney for catering help on several occasions, and she has never disappointed! I can always count on delicious fresh food, excellent service and an outstanding all-round experience. I look forward to the next time we have an event, and will continue to recommend Sydney to anyone who has need of a great gourmet caterer and sweet goodie maker. And she’s fun to work with – who could ask for more?'' Pepper Meiler Director, Online Marketing & Product Management Equity Music Group ''Sydney creates amazing desserts. I have ordered desserts from her to send as gifts and always get rave reviews with everyone wanting to know how they can reach Sydney to order desserts. If you can describe the kind of dessert you like she can create it to your particular taste.'' Ric Pennisi Managing Director Marsh USA Inc. ''I love everything she makes. I can't even tell you what I like the most. I have tried it all. The cookies, the cakes, the candy, the jelly, the quality is exceptional. Everyone who has received her products as gifts, have loved them.'' Kristen Petrarca Delta Airlines Cincinnati, Ohio "It's a good thing my grandmother is not around to read this; Sydney's fudge is much better than hers. I can't believe I just wrote that, but it is that good. You have to try it to believe it. I did." Steve Roehm, CHt www.nashvillehypnosis.com |

| Haus Blend Posted June 18, 2008 at 09:12:14 AM by Carrington Fox To go along with its new pasta boutique, hot dog store and burgeoning restaurant scene, Germantown is getting a new coffee shop. Kat Roos has begun construction on a 600-sq.-ft. space in the ground floor of the Summer Street Lofts, where she will launch DrinkHaus Espresso & Tea later this summer. Roos and her husband purchased the tiny apartment a year ago when it was a residence. In the meantime, the homeowners' association of the Summer Street Lofts voted to allow commercial enterprise throughout the development. (As far as Metro was concerned, the building was already zoned for mixed-use development.) So far, Roos, who lives in the nearby Morgan Park development, is the first property owner to take advantage of the zoning change. DrinkHaus will offer Batdorf & Bronson coffee, organic teas from The Art of Tea and local Bravo Gelato. Roos will produce a few pastries in house and will bring in others from Sydney Trading Company, including a vegetarian panini with fig jam made by STC's queen of tarts, Sydney Garrett-Hayes. | Haus Party Posted September 02, 2008 at 05:02:20 AM by Carrington Fox I'm sorry y'all didn't get the memo about Friday morning's breakfast at Drink Haus Espresso & Tea, the sleek little jewel box of a coffee shop in Germantown. Mr. Pink and I were there, attempting to make lists of our favorite things for the upcoming Best of Nashville issue. I was breaking the fast with an affogato—peanut butter gelato with a shot of espresso—and the Scene's newly minted managing editor was sipping a mocha cappuccino with orange zest, when in walked Farmers' Market maven Marne Duke, who is putting the finishing touches on the upcoming fourth issue of Local Table magazine. With Marne was food writer and new Germantown resident Tim Davis. A recent transplant from North Carolina and an alt-weekly alumnus of Creative Loafing, Tim just wrapped up a cookbook that he co-wrote with John T. Edge of Southern Foodways Alliance under the working title The Spiral Bound Bible of Southern Cooking: A Community Cookbook. Just as the four of us were hatching a plan to knock over a liquor store in order to underwrite our admission to Thursday's James Beard dinner at Martha's at the Plantation, there was Queen of Hearts Sydney Garrett-Hayes, former pastry chef at The Standard. Fresh off of her cooking debut on Channel 5's Talk of the Town, Sydney was dropping off a lemon cake and a French-style apricot tart to go along with Drink Haus' deliciously frothy steamed beverages made with Batdorf & Bronson espresso. With spiral notebook in hand, City Paper reporter William Williams arrived in groovy spectacles and soul patch to interview baristas Ryan Caudle and Jon Yeager about Drink Haus, which opened three weeks ago and—if this morning was any indication—is the place to be. The only person missing was owner Kat Roos. Maybe we'll catch her—and you—there next time. Of course, next time we're trying to get some work done, we'll have to go somewhere else. With so much going on, we didn't get far on our Best Of Nashville list. Got any suggestions? If so, you can post them here or cast your vote online. Located at 500 Madison Street, Drink Haus is open daily. |
