| A Little About Sydney Born in November 1964, I was raised on a maple syrup farm in Lebanon Ohio just North of Cincinnati. I grew up just around the corner from Marty Rowe of Diamond Rio - rode the school bus with Steve Shutts - Owner of The Honkey Tonk Hall of Fame and attended church with astronaut Neil Armstrong and actor Woody Harrelson. I have been fortunate to have lived in the midst of very famous people. My youth was spent splitting wood in the summer months for our maple syrup production and tending our 1 acre vegetable garden which was a bountiful harvest for our family and several of the local produce markets. By age 12 I was operating my own birdseed business selling birdseed to friends and associates of my family. I studied piano from the age of 5 and when my mother hosted ladies from the Altar Guild I would entertain them with a rousing medley from the hymnal played in ragtime, which was not as popular to the Altar Guild Ladies as it was to me. I attended college at Miami University where I studied Archaeology/Anthropology. I loved the course, but never being a very attentive student I dropped out and elected to make the study of culture a lifelong hobby. In 2008 I returned to The University of Phoenix in pursuit of a degree in Psychology and certification as a hypnotherapist with the ultimate goal of becoming an Intervention Counselor. I am of Appalachian heritage, my family hails from the town of Eastern in Floyd County Kentucky. Just up the 'crick' from Butcher Holler. Both my great grand parents were Scottish Irish and Cherokee. Through learning about my Appalachian heritage I developed a desire to make a contribution to the indigenous people of the Appalachian region and Cherokee Americans. And the Appalachian American Relief Fund (AARF) was created. The primary goal of AARF is to provide funding for education, housing, substance abuse recovery and whatever Appalachian people need. Locally in Nashville, we are focusing on the needs the many homeless currently living without shelter or food. |

I read cookbooks and culinary glossaries like novels and began my love affair with cooking at 10, learning the finer points of cornbread and chicken and dumplins from my mamaw and baking cookies from the church cookbook. My aunt was a very adept candy maker and upon returning to Nashville in 2005 I began to research her recipes and opened The Sydney Trading Company - a full service catering, confection and dessert delivery business. I believe in using the finest and freshest ingredients available and take pride in the high quality of my cuisine. As a young girl, I mesmerized watching Julia Child, The Galloping Gourmet, Justin Wilson and the Great Chefs series when it was broadcast on PBS. I thought this was THE DREAM JOB, but it was not until my 30’s I began to cook professionally. I apprenticed under 3 French chefs and lived in the Perigord Region of France where I learned regional cuisine and charcuterie from my ex-fiancées mother and father. In 2001 I opened a French style bakery and café in Burlington Kentucky. To sum up the experience of The French Bakery… it was well before its time in Burlington, as the Crème Brulee had to regularly be described as " it’s kinda like puddin’." It was the most trying experience of my life and after it closed a year later, I continued working as a private chef and making pastries for local restaurants. I moved back to Nashville in 2005 in pursuit of my own cooking show and have made local appearances on Talk of the Town . I have always searched for a vehicle for my talent and personality and Nashville has always been home..... |
